Propecia
Propecia is a synthetic antiandrogen drug used to treat male hair loss (on the head) by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Drug Uses
Propecia is used to treat baldness in men with mild to moderate hair loss. The active ingredient in Propecia inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, thereby improving hair re-growth and slowing down hair loss. Propecia does not affect the growth of hair on any other part of the body. Propecia is also used to treat prostate cancer and other medical conditions as determined by a doctor.
In some cases a noticeable improvement is seen after three months of treatment but for most men results are observed after a longer period of treatment. When Propecia is discontinued, hair loss will resume.
Dosage
Propecia should always be taken as prescribed by a doctor. The usual dosage is one tablet a day. Some doctors prescribe half a tablet a day, or one tablet every second day, but your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you. Propecia does not have to be taken with food.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
Side-effects
Side-effects are rarely reported, but common ones include a decrease in semen, breast enlargement and tenderness, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, rash, itching, swelling and testicular pain.
Precautions
Avoid using Propecia if you are allergic to any of the drug’s components, or if you have experienced an allergic reaction to a drug called Proscar.
Propecia is for use by men only. Propecia is not for use by women or children. A pregnant woman should not even handle a broken tablet because the contents can be absorbed through the skin and cause harm to an unborn fetus.
Patients with a history of liver problems should use Propecia with caution.
If you are due to have a PSA test for prostate cancer ensure that the medical staff doing the test are informed that you are using Propecia. Propecia can affect the accuracy of the test results.
Overdose
There is no available information about Propecia overdose. However, any medication taken in excess will cause serious symptoms. If overdose is suspected, call for emergency assistance immediately.
Storage
Propecia should be stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.
